Description
Producer notes
The story of the winery starts with an enterprising Prussian engineer, Edmund Farke, who entered into a contract with the Ukrainian authorities to improve municipal infrastructure in the late ХІХ century. In return, he was allowed to lease a plot of land with plaster deposits to develop alabaster works. Farke’s plant soon became the largest and prosperous enterprise in Eastern Ukraine, while the unique microclimate multi-kilometre underground city of the plaster mines was later used as the basis for the winery.
In the mid-1940s, under Joseph Stalin’s personal order, works on developing the manufacture of «Soviet Sparkling», started. Celebration of the Great Victory demanded a special beverage, and the French recipe was soon found. Creation of the new wine for the winning country became possible owing to the unique microclimate of Artemovsk plaster tunnels, then discovered by Soviet wine experts. All year round the halls kept a constant temperature of 12-14oС and stable air humidity of 88-90%, similar conditions for manufacturing sparkling wine in Champagne.
In 1954 the first 500,000 bottles of sparkling wine were produced. The wine was of such high quality that its sale was restricted to party officials.
Since the 1950s, significant investment has been made in technology to carry on producing high-quality sparkling wines.
